The Origin of Mekhong

In 1941, during the era of Field Marshal Por Pibulsongkram, there was a call for the reclamation of lands on the right banks of the Mekhong River, which encompassed four provinces, from the French. This culminated in the Indochina War. Luang Wichitwathakan, Director-General of the Fine Arts Department at the time, composed a famous patriotic song, “Kam Khong”, with the purpose of letting locals in the four provinces on both banks of the river know that they were united in spirit as Thais. The song became very popular, and it boosted nationalistic sentiment and morale. Herein lies the origin of the name chosen by the Excise Department that same year for a local spirit, “Mekhong,” specially brewed to replace whiskey imports from abroad.
